Stakes Extravaganza Set For Closing Weekend At Montana Downs Great Falls Meeting

Horsemen stuffed the entry box for the closing weekend of the 2010 Montana Downs at Great Falls meeting as 209 horses have been entered for the final three days of racing that get underway Friday. First race for the nine-race card Friday, July 30 is 4:30p.m. while first race on Saturday and Sunday is 1:30 p.m.

After Friday’s and Saturday’s racing program, the popular Indian Relay race qualifiers will be held with the top teams returning for the finale after Sunday’s card

Saturday’s 10 race program will be highlighted by a pair of thoroughbred stakes, the Big Sky Oaks for fillies and mares and the Lewis and Clark Overnight Derby for three-year-olds. Both races will be contested at seven furlongs. Also on Saturday, quarter horses will compete in the $7,765 Charles Russell Derby at 300 yards.

Sunday’s card will feature six stakes races on the 12 race program. Two-year-old quarter horses will compete in the $13,615 Charles M. Russell Futurity, the richest race of the 2010 season.

Thoroughbreds will take center stage three stakes races, the Treasure State Futurity, Montana State Fair Handicap and the Montana Distance Series Stakes.

Paint horses will compete in the $3,000 Montana Downs Overnight Futurity while all breeds will compete in the $3,700 Cascade County Speed Express at 660 yards.

After a week off, racing will move to Missoula for a two day stand on Friday, August 13 and Saturday, August 14
