GREAT FALLS, Montana – It was a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon at the Seibel Soccer Complex with the Argo men’s soccer team beating the Lethbridge Horns 3-0. Although it was the first game of the season, UGF played extremely well as a unit. “It was a good first outing. The boys played very hard and we were excited to get the season underway.
The Argos controlled the ball the majority of the first half. Striking first for the Argos to gain the lead was defensive midfielder, William Obregon. He was assisted by newcomer Ritchie Ponce in the 16th minute. Chris Worthen continued the Argo’s offensive assault by scoring off of his own rebound in the 30th minute. In the last ten minutes of the first half, the Horns had better movement resulting in multiple shots, but fortunately they were not able to convert. The half ended with UGF leading 2-0.
The Argo’s started the second half very aggressively behind the play of Christian Johansen. He finished the game with 5 shots on goal. UGF’s offensive attack was relentless but unfortunately the Argos were unable to add to their lead. What they were able to do was control the ball and not allow a Horns attack.
About midway through the second half, the Argos began playing a more defensive minded game. They played tenacious defense and protected their lead. By doing that UGF had fewer opportunities to score themselves but Midfielder, Ben Freiborg, took full advantage of a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, expanding the Argo’s lead 3-0.
The Argos will travel to Olympia, Washington to play their next game against Evergreen State College on August 27th. UGF’s next home game is September 11th against Colorado Christian University.
