March 2, 2010—BOZEMAN, Mont.—Montana State Track and Field Signs Three More Prep Stars

Montana State Director of Track and Field Dale Kennedy announced the signing of three more letters of intent by high school prep athletes bound for MSU.

Slater Powell of Corvallis, Montana (Corvallis HS) is a two-time state class “A” champion hurdler in the 110-meter event. He is also the 2009 state champion in the 300 hurdles as well. Powell also has a 49-second split in the 4-by-4 relay which makes Kennedy think he could do some relay duty as well.

“We’re losing two hurdlers this year in Ben Soukup and Scott Peterson so we’re looking for Slater to come in and make an immediate impact in those events,” Kennedy said. “We’re really excited to see him coming to MSU.”

Slater will major in math education.

Trevor Polson hails from Gillette, Wyoming and is a product of Campbell County High School. Polson is a distance runner and soccer player who competed in track and field for the first time this season as a senior. He placed second in the Wyoming state cross country meet this year and 17th in the Nike Northwest Regionals. In addition, he is a three-time all-state selection in soccer.

“I think that Trevor has a lot of potential in cross country as well as track. He’ll be a terrific addition into our distance group. He is really strong academically as well,” Kennedy said.

Polson plans to major in pre-physical therapy.

Lierin Flanagan of Kenai, Alaska, signed with MSU as a sprinter. She was the Alaska state champion in the 200, 400 and 4-by-400 relay last season. Flanagan was also chosen as the 2009 Region Athlete of the Year and is a three-sport athlete is volleyball, basketball, and track. She plans to major in exercise science.

“She is a really good sprinter,” Kennedy said, “and we are excited to have her coming in to join our corps of women’s sprinters.”
