Billings Outlaws coach Heron O’Neal has announced the signing of former Montana State linebacker Bobby Daly and former Carroll College wide receiver Travis Browne.

Both were signed at the Outlaws’ open tryout last weekend.

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Daly, a Helena native, finished his MSU career in 2008 and played for the Central Valley (Fresno, Calif.) Coyotes of the arenafootball2 league last year.

Daly was a three-time all-Big Sky Conference selection and was named to the Walter Camp FCS All-America team after his junior season in 2007. The Helena Capital grad led the Big Sky in tackles as a sophomore and junior, and finished fifth nationally with 136 tackles and 151/2 tackles for loss as a junior.

The 5-11, 185-pound Browne, a Stevensville native, led Carroll in receiving in 2008, catching 67 passes for 1,028 and 11 touchdowns. He also returned 24 kicks for 388 yards and a touchdown for the Saints in ’08. He was a two-time all-Frontier Conference selection and earned NAIA All-America honors as a senior.

“Both Daly and Browne were really impressive at the tryout,” said O’Neal. “Bobby is not the kind of guy who blows you away with a 40 time, but you could see he’s a very physical and instinctive player. He showed good speed at the tryout … he was running around covering wide receivers, which is what you have to do as a linebacker in this league.

“Travis showed really good speed and quickness, and great agility to go with that. He’s got great wiggle in his hips … I can see how he would be a tough guy to tackle once he gets the ball in his hands.”

The Outlaws will open training camp on Feb. 14. The team’s Indoor Football League season opener is Sunday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. vs. the Kent (Wash.) Predators at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark.
