The temperatures are dropping, but the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls is heating up for the 32nd Annual Montana PRCA Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals January 14th, 15th, and 16th . The top 12 cowboys and cowgirls in each event are packing their bags and loading their gear to head to Great Falls to compete for championship titles and recognition as the best of the best in the Montana Circuit for the 2010 season.
Bareback riding leader, J.R. Vezain from Cowly, WY is one of the many young guns at this years’ Circuit Finals. The rising roughstock star won’t turn 19 until February, and by then he might be a Circuit Champion. Vezain enters the weekend leading the Bareback Riding, 7th in the Bull Riding and only $970 behind Justin Viles for the All Around.
Outstanding Saddle Bronc rider, Jake Costello will travel from Newell, SD to Great Falls to try and win his fifth Montana Circuit Championship. Costello has a $3200 lead over his brother-in-law, Jake Hayworth. He started out his 2010 season with the average win at the Dodge National Circuit Finals in Pocatello, ID.
The Team Roping leaders are not partners at the circuit finals. Because you can enter a rodeo with a different partner if your regular partner is unable to enter that particular rodeo causes this duo to be the leaders, but not partners. Jason Handy leads the headers and will rope with his partner Chase Gauger. Handy and Gauger were the circuit champions in 2006 and would like to be the champions for 2010.
On the heeling side, Just Viles, is the leader over Chase Gauger by only $1,000. Justin will be roping with Matt Robertson. The duo is the defending circuit champions from last year. Viles is also entered in the Tie Down Roping and comes in first for the All Around. The team roping should be nothing less than a good battle and a hot event to watch.
Ty Erickson, the other young gun, comes to the circuit finals leading the steer wrestling with a $1300 lead over defending champion, Beau Franzen. Erickson comes from the steer wrestling capitol of Montana, Helena. Erickson credits his mentor, Nick Stubblefield, and his good horse, “Cisco” for his good fortune this past summer.
Brett Fleming and Tie Down Roping go hand in hand and this year is no different. Brett enters the circuit finals $2300 over Bryant Mikkelson of Buffalo. Brett is a 3 time circuit champion and would like to make this his 4th. He is healthy, after recovering from ACL knee surgery in 2009, and riding his good horse, Stoplight which he credits to his success this past season.
Barrel Racer, Linsday Karp will be competing at her fourth circuit finals in a row. She has a lead of about $1300 over defending champion, Theresa Walter. Karp’s 2010 season included a victory at the Big Sky Pro Rodeo Roundup in Great Falls and she hopes to do the same at circuit finals in Great Falls. Lindsay has the help of her two great horses Hess and Harley to help her win the 2010 Circuit Championship.
Beau Hill is back in the house. It has been awhile since Beau Hill rode a bull in the middle of winter in Montana, but is looking forward to it. Hill enters the circuit finals with more than $14,000 won in the bull riding. He is a past circuit champion from 2003-2005 and looking to win his fourth title.
