No FBS for Montana?

Its been an argument within Griz Nation for years. Should the Montana Grizzlies move up to the FBS? And while it does not seem likely that the Griz will move up any time soon - wouldn't it be nice to see how they fare against FBS competition?

For the third straight year the Grizzlies will not play a bowl subdivision team. I hear Griz fans talk all the time about how the teams gets no national attention. But how is the national media supposed to take notice of the Griz if they are playing Western St. in their opener???? You could have given me 10 guesses and I could not have told you which state Western St. is in (its Colorado by the way.) If the Griz ever want to get noticed on the national scene - they need to put their necks out there and play some tough competition.

I know a lot of people will point to Cal Poly and Weber St on the schedule as worthy opponents - but who outside of Montana, San Luis Obispo and Utah will even know those games are happening? Look at what happens to teams when they upset - or even almost pull an upset over an FBS team. Cal Poly was all over the national spotlight against Wisconsin. When Appalachian St beat Michigan, it was the story of the year. Even when Montana St. went to Colorado and won - it got people talking about the Bobcats.

Maybe the Griz don't want another loss like the one to Iowa in 2006. But in all reality - what do they have to lose. If they get blown out - the national media is not going to talk about what a joke the Griz are. A loss is expected. But if they win - or even come close to it - more than a few people will take notice of Montana football. Nobody was talking about how bad the Bobcat's were when they lost to two FBS teams this year - or when they lost to Texas A&M two years ago - and they even got some props for hanging with Minnesota.

Maybe the Griz don't need the money that comes with traveling to an FBS school. But this should not be about the money. In my opinion - Montana has one of the greatest football traditions of any school in all of college football. It's time they showed the rest of the country what Grizzly football is all about.
