UM officials eyeing emergency alert decisions

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — University of Montana officials say they are looking at changes in sending out emergency alert notifications following an incident last week where SWAT teams in armored vehicles arrived on campus while students remained oblivious to any potential danger.

Police were responding to an e-mail warning of a sniper headed for the roof of the law school building, but it was 74 minutes before the alert went out to students.

The threat was a hoax, and authorities say they immediately suspected it to be a hoax.

But the law school dean sent an e-mail to law students and faculty instructing them to evacuate the building, something police say they would not have done.

Some students say they were concerned they were heading into danger by evacuating the building.
