HELENA - Montana's unemployment rate continued an upward climb with a slight increase in January.

The Montana Department of Labor says the state's unemployment increased to 6.8% from 6.7% in December, which was up from 6.4% in November. The nation's unemployment rate fell from 10% to 9.7% in January.

Montana Labor Commissioner Keith Kelly says he sees good signs in the nation's economy, but he says employment is lagging behind overall growth.

The agency reported that there was overall job growth in nonagricultural, payroll jobs including construction.
