MISSOULA - The return of horse racing to Missoula has some enthusiasts cheering the impact it could have on the industry statewide.

Last week, Missoula County officials signed a lease agreement with Eric Spector, president of Onieda Capital, to bring racing back to Missoula Downs in August during the Western Montana Fair.

State Board of Racing Executive Director Ryan Sherman says the return of racing events in Missoula gives the state an inside track to bringing more events back to the western slope circuit. He says racing opportunities west of Great Falls have been in short supply since Missoula and Kalispell dropped out five years ago.

Sherman said he is confident purses being considered for the Missoula races will be on par with levels in 2006.
