Libby mulls surveillance cameras to combat vandals

LIBBY - The city of Libby is considering installing surveillance cameras on Mineral Avenue to help catch vandals who have caused thousands of dollars in damage.

But some residents are concerned the cameras could be an invasion of their privacy and used by police to keep track of people entering downtown bars.

Libby Police Chief Jim Smith says that wouldn't happen because the cameras would send the images to a hard drive kept at the police department, and then only viewed to help with a criminal investigation.

Mayor Doug Roll says the cameras would cost $40,000 to $70,000 dollars, depending on the system. Libby tax accountant Wayne Hirst says he's against the cameras and will move to Troy or sue the city if they're installed.
