GREAT FALLS - Great Falls city commissioners have placed a three-month moratorium on medical marijuana businesses in the city limits while city staff determine where such businesses could be located.

The commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday for the 90-day moratorium. City Commissioner Mary Jolley voted against the moratorium, saying it could prevent some patients from obtaining the marijuana they need.

City planning director Michael Haynes says more research is needed to determine where medical marijuana businesses should be allowed to set up shop.

The businesses are run by caregivers, allowed by law to grow medical marijuana. Montana voters passed the medical marijuana initiative in 2004.
