MISSOULA - Officials in Missoula say they plan to start counting biking and walking commuters in May to get information about trends on the city's streets and trails.

The city hasn't tracked human-powered travelers since 2003. Dave Prescott is transportation planner with the Office of Planning and Grants. He says a new format will make annual counts more sustainable.

Senior transportation planner Ann Cundy says the counts are needed to update the Missoula Active Transportation Plan. Missoula City Councilwoman Stacy Rye says the counts will help in designing major transportation projects.
