MISSOULA - A new distance learning project for school-aged children has named a director.

Robert Currie is director of the Michigan Virtual School in Lansing for the past six years. He will begin work as director of the Montana Virtual Academy on Jan. 4.

MTVA is based in the new Phyllis J. Washington Education Center at the University of Montana. It was created to offer kindergarteners through high school seniors access to high-quality, online instruction.

Initially, MTVA will emphasize high school core subject courses, while advanced placement, dual credit and enrichment coursework is planned for the future. Currie has worked as a high school vice principal and principal, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, and a district superintendent.
