MISSOULA - State wildlife officials are seeking public comment on their recommended response to a landowner petition to close waterfowl hunting on a portion of Mitchell Slough in the Bitterroot Valley.

The state Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks is recommending keeping waterfowl hunting open in the slough, but also work with area landowners, ranchers and sportsmen to identify areas that are more suitable for public hunters and others that may pose concerns. FWP plans a public hearing on Dec. 9 in Hamilton.

The FWP recommendation came in response to a petition by John and Kathy Lewis to close waterfowl hunting on a portion of the slough that runs through their property near Victor Crossing.
