GREAT FALLS - Leaders in Great Falls are rethinking the city's ban on smoking within 20 feet of buildings.

They say the biggest factor in repealing the rule is the impact on tavern owners already reeling from an Oct. 1 statewide ban on smoking ban.

A motion to repeal the city's 20-foot rule could be introduced and debated Tuesday at the City Commission meeting. A public hearing is scheduled for Dec. 15.

Mayor Dona Stebbins says it's time to do something about the rule to help tavern owners make it through a difficult economic period.

Some bars in Great Falls have added outside smoking rooms to accommodate customers who smoke. Other detractors say it's impossible for some bars to comply with the rule.
