HELENA - Attorney General Steve Bullock has filled a consumer protection post in the Justice Department with an attorney who has a history of tax trouble.

The Montana Supreme Court reprimanded James P. Molloy earlier this year and placed him on probation for five years for repeatedly failing to pay state and federal income taxes between 1995 and 2005. He has since paid the taxes.

Molloy was once one of the lead attorneys in the lawsuit that increased state funding for Montana public schools by millions of dollars. His new job pays $78,500.

Bullock says his former colleague is an accomplished lawyer and the state is lucky to have him in the job. The attorney general says the tax issue didn't come up in the interview and says Molloy already paid the price for that mistake.
