MISSOULA - Greenbacks in a green bank. That's a possible mantra for the new First Interstate Bank building in Missoula, a 118,000-square-foot, five-floor structure designed with energy efficiency in mind, including low-flow plumbing, rainwater capture, insulated windows and the use of nontoxic and recycled materials.

The bank is seeking Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design certification for the structure, which took 20 months to complete after ground was broken in February 2008.

Among the other environmentally friendly highlights: Lights that switch off when no one's around and groundwater that's used to keep the bank cool during the summer.

Kevin Gordon, who helped build the new bank, says about 97% of First Intestate's old bank building and most of the construction waste from the new structure was recycled.
