Rehberg seeks permanent repeal of minibike ban

HELENA - U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg says he is seeking a more permanent repeal of a ban on the sale of youth ATVs and dirt bikes due to lead content.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has said it will delay enforcement of a new anti-lead law as it pertains to the minibikes. For a while earlier this year, the law kept all-terrain vehicles and other motorbikes designed for children off showroom floors.

Rehberg and others in Congress say the CPSC is overstepping the intent of a law passed last year that was intended to ban lead-tainted toys.

The Republican says his amendment to the House Financial Services Appropriations Bill would prevent enforcement of the prohibition.

Rehberg says he wants to make sure that ATV enthusiasts don't get punished by political bickering in Washington, D.C.
