HAMILTON - The Bitterroot National Forest says backpackers reported run-ins with a black bear near Big Creek Lake over the 4th of July weekend.

Hikers reported that a small, cinnamon-colored black bear tore three backpacking tents in the Big Creek Lake basin, west of Victor near the Montana-Idaho border. The bear did not appear to fear people.

Forest officials reported the incident to the state Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, but given the remote location, it is unclear what, if any, action will be taken.
