HELENA - What is often called Montana's longest convention stands to give the Helena economy a lift.

The 2009 legislative session began on Monday and will continue for about 3½ months. The biennial session boosts trade at Helena food and lodging establishments.

The Convention & Visitors Bureau in Helena says occupancy in hotels and motels runs 5% to 15% higher during the biennial legislative sessions. Business comes from the legislators themselves, and from the special-interest groups that have representatives in Helena while law are being made.
