Mayor John Engen and Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Bender made the announcement Monday. Painter has been assistant chief for the past five years and began as a Missoula firefighter in 1980. He served as a fire captain for four years before becoming assistant chief.

He will take over as chief on Jan. 1, with the retirement of Chief Tom Steenberg. Painter is a Sentinel High School graduate who studied fire science at the Missoula College of Technology and business administration at the University of Montana.
