HELENA - The Montana National Guard says its plan for helping troops deal with post-traumatic stress disorder exceeds federal requirements.

The Guard delivered its plan to Gov. Brian Schweitzer Tuesday. National Guard Adjutant Gen. Randy Mosley says the guard called in mental health experts in the wake of the 2007 suicide of an Iraq war veteran.

Schweitzer says the Guard needs to help prepare soldiers for civilian life just as it prepares them for combat. The plan calls for increased medical evaluations following deployment, more mental health resources, improved understanding of the stresses and many other new initiatives.
