HELENA - State Sen. Sam Kitzenberg of Glasgow lost the Democratic primary in June for state superintendent of schools.

Now he's now running as a write-in candidate for state House District 35 in northeastern Montana. The 61-year-old Kitzenberg says he thinks he has a legitimate chance against Republican incumbent Wayne Stahl of Saco and Democrat LeRoy Baublitz of Malta.

HD35 covers the northern halves of Phillips and Valley counties and includes the towns of Glasgow, Malta and Saco. In November 2006 Kitzenberg switched parties as a state senator, from Republican to Democrat. That allowed Democrats to gain a 26-24 edge in the state Senate for the 2007 Legislature, after the 2006 election results had left the Senate in a 25-25 tie between the parties.
