HELENA - A floating island made of recycled material and placed in a Helena pond is intended to cleanse the water.

The 1,200-square-foot island is at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds pond, where ducks and other birds foul the water. The island made mostly from recycled plastic was placed at the pond on Friday.

The manufacturer says plants that will grow through the island will help cleanse the water.

Floating Island International in the Montana community of Shepherd donated the island and says it's valued at about $40,000. The company invited Montana Sen. Max Baucus to choose a site for the island.
