Petition to recall sheriff being circulated

HARDIN - A petition to recall Big Horn County Sheriff Lawrence "Pete" Big Hair is being circulated.

County Clerk Cindy Maxwell on Thursday approved the language in the petition submitted by former Undersheriff Bob Runge of Hardin. Maxwell says petition supporters need to gather 1,155 signatures from registered voters in Big Horn County within the next three months to initiate a recall election.

Runge's petition seeks to recall Big Hair for an alleged lack of knowledge of the department; his failure to ensure deputies had proper certification; removing inmates from the county jail for work details and his recent arrest for domestic assault, endangering the welfare of children and bribery.

The domestic assault case is in tribal court. Big Hair has pleaded not guilty. Big Hair could not immediately be reached for comment.
