WEST YELLOWSTONE - Officials symbolically shredded a $3.7 million mortgage for a Gallatin County composting facility that processes waste from Yellowstone National Park. That's after they received a $4 million grant from the National Park Service.

Park superintendent Suzanne Lewis joined all three Gallatin County commissioners for Tuesday's impromptu ceremony at the West Yellowstone Senior Center. The grant allowed the county to pay off the remaining $3.7 million on the $4 million loan from the state for the West Yellowstone-Hebgen Basin Composting Facility. The center processes more than 3,000 tons of compost a year from the park and the surrounding area.

The money was appropriated by Congress. That gave the Park Service the authority to use it to pay off the loan.
