ANACONDA - A 31-year-old eastern Montana woman has died of meningitis at an Anaconda hospital.

Anaconda-Deer Lodge County health officials say the woman died over the weekend of April 19th, two days after she started feeling symptoms. Health department director Linda Best says it was an isolated case and there is no threat to the public health.

The onset of meningitis is sudden, with symptoms of high fever, headache, stiff neck or a dark purple rash. It is fatal in about 10% of cases. Best says the woman was from eastern Montana, but had been in Anaconda for about three weeks before she died. All those who had contact with the victim have been treated and Best said no other meningitis cases have been reported in the Anaconda area.

The woman's name and hometown weren't released.
