Bison calves arrive from Canada

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) — A foundation building a herd of bison in northern Montana imported 71 calves from Canada this week.

The American Prairie Foundation says the nine-month-old calves, which arrived Wednesday, will be held in isolation for a month before being released into the main herd in southern Phillips County on March 1. With the new bison, the herd will number 216.

The Great Falls Tribune reports the foundation hopes to eventually have at least 1,000 animals on its 123,000-acre reserve.

Reserve manager Bryce Christensen says the calves imported from Elk Island National Park in northern Alberta are descendants of wild bison that roamed north-central Montana in the early 1900s.

The reserve also has bison from Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota.
