SkyWest to serve Butte airport under EAS program

BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — SkyWest Airlines has been chosen to serve Butte's Bert Mooney Airport under the federally subsidized Essential Air Service program.

The U.S. Department of Transportation made the announcement Thursday, and the company says it will have 14 flights per week between Butte and Salt Lake City, adding one Saturday flight to its pre-EAS schedule.

The transportation department says SkyWest agreed to reduce the federal subsidy it requested in its original proposal. To serve the airport, the airline had asked for $803,093 but agreed to an annual subsidy of $672,230.

Florida-based Gulfstream International Airlines also was competing to provide the service, but its proposal did not meet EAS's requirement that rural airports be connected to a large or medium-sized hub when possible.

EAS was created in 1978 to ensure service on less profitable routes to remote communities.
