Judge: Neglected malamutes to remain in shelter

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A state judge reversed an earlier ruling in which he said the owner of about 160 malamutes seized in a Jefferson County animal cruelty case could help find homes for about half of them.

District Judge Loren Tucker ruled in November that Mike Chilinski could help adopt out the dogs.

Prosecutors asked Tucker to reconsider, alleging that Chilinski planned to sell the dogs.

Chilinski's attorney, Martin Eveland, said Tucker's initial ruling didn't mean his client must give the dogs away.

Tucker ruled Wednesday that the dogs should remain in the custody of the Lewis and Clark Humane Society and that Chilinski should put up a $2,000 bond to help pay for their care. Chilinski faces trial in May on 91 counts of felony cruelty to animals.
