MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - The U.S. Forest Service is proposing
banning motorized access to two popular Lolo Pass ski spots.
The areas known as the Crystal Theatre and The Spot are a
favorite for skiers and snowboarders because of their consistent
snow and low danger of avalanche.
The Missoulian reports the areas are already closed to wheeled
vehicles year round and to snowmobiles from October to December.
Missoula Ranger District recreation officer Andy Kulla told the
Missoulian the service is trying to protect the special areas
without impacting other recreation nearby.
Kulla says a Forest Service survey found little motorized
traffic to the ski spots.
The area is surrounded by several hundred miles of snowmobile
trails.
The deadline for submitting comments on the plan is June 15.
