Media Release for Three Forks Fly-In

The Montana Antique Airplane Association is hosting its 33rd annual fly in at Three Forks, July 29th-31st. This great community event is free to the public.

Thursday morning begins with the Young Eagles flying program. This program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8-17, the opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane. These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) member volunteers. The Boy Scouts will serve breakfast and lunch throughout the weekend to raise money for Troop 672.

On Thursday, airplanes will begin to arrive from around Montana and other states. The aircraft range in age from a 1929 Travel Air 6000 to a 2007 Harmon Rocket.

Friday and Saturday more airplanes will arrive. Starting around 2 p.m.on Saturday these vintage aircraft will engage in flour bombing and spot landing competitions. The object is to be the closest to the target. In the flour bombing, a two-person team will fly over a target, drop a flour bomb, and try to make a direct hit. Spot landing is a competition where a pilot tries to land his/her airplane “on the numbers” or on the spot. In addition to the events, awards will be given for best Antique (built before 1945), best War Bird, best Classic (1945-1955), and best Contemporary (1956-1970) as well as People’s Choice.

There will be venders and concessions on Saturday and sky divers will jump from high above the festivities.

The Three Forks Fly In is fun for the whole family and gives us the opportunity to look back in time at one of mankind’s greatest inventions and reflect on how far and fast we’ve come.
