What: 1910 Commemoration Event- Buffalo Soldier Education and Historical presentation

The 25th Infantry Regiment of Buffalo Soldiers garrisoned at Ft. Missoula during the time of the Fires of 1910 played a prominent role in saving the towns of Avery and Wallace, ID. Companies I and G were assigned to these two rural towns in Idaho. Company I, in Wallace, ID, began trail construction in Placer Creek and along the St. Joe road prior to the Big Blowup. When the Fires neared the town of Wallace the company was called back and was paramount in evacuating women and children.

In Avery, ID Company G was instrumental in organizing the evacuation and maintaining order. It is recorded that Lieutenant Edson E. Lewis took an active role in decisions to evacuate and protect Avery, ID. Company G played a critical role in the backfiring operations that helped to save the town of Avery, ID. In the aftermath of the fires the Buffalo Soldiers were dispatched to retrieve bodies in nearby areas. The combined acts of the Buffalo Soldiers helped to save countless lives in the Fires of 1910. This Missoula 1910 Commemoration event will honor the lives lost in the Fires of 1910 and share the rich history of the Buffalo Soldiers.
